The People of Honduras
For most Hondurans, life is challenging. It is known as one of the most dangerous countries, so only the wealthy can protect themselves, but even then, everyone is in danger. Despite this, Hondurans still celebrate traditions like the Punta Gorda Festival and keep other traditions alive ("Honduras"). Honduras also has a vibrant history of protest, but it has historically been brutally repressed by the military. Most Hondurans live in fear. Honduras is brimming with culture and tradition, but it is overshadowed by crime and poverty.

Beauty in Honduras
Honduras has an extremely rich culture centered around family and tradition, and has many indigenous groups. The Mayan culture is still alive in the west of the country where the ruins at Copan are a focal point for the local Maya population. Honduras is also home to many beautiful beaches that attract vacationers. Honduras has the world's largest barrier reef ("Honduras"). Honduran music also has a distinct sound--it takes most of its elements from African and European nations and combines them into a style of their own.

Struggles Honduras is facing
Although Honduras can be a beautiful country, there is a lot of corruption and crime beneath the surface. Riddled with poverty, high crime rates only exasperate the problem. Murder is one of the biggest fears of the Honduran people--crime is a major reason why so many people leave the country, along with economic problems caused by climate change. Amelia Frank-Vitale, a Honduran native, tells about a discussion she had with 9-year-old Andres, who told her about the first time he saw someone killed in front of his eyes. He talked about the multiple murders he'd seen and wished he could unsee them. When Frank-Vitale told him she'd never seen a murder, he was socked that someone her age had never seen those things (Frank-Vitale). These crime issues combined with economic issues due to climate change have created a very dangerous and unstable country.
